Beginning January 1, 2005, motor carriers planning to haul certain highly hazardous materials in interstate or intrastate commerce must have a special safety permit. This includes certain types and quantities of radioactive materials (Class 7), explosives, toxic inhalant materials and compressed/refrigerated liquid methane or natural gas. The motor carrier must have “Satisfactory” safety rating and a satisfactory security plan to qualify for the permit. More information can be found in Parts 385, 386 and 390.
