An excellent way to monitor information on your CSP, at no cost, is to regularly visit the SAFER and SMS websites. On SAFER, you can view a Company Snapshot, which provides general information about your operations, number of DOT recordable accidents and roadside inspections, out-of-service rates, and the date/rating of your last compliance review (audit). Find your record by entering your U.S. DOT or MC number. For an example, see Figure 9.1 below.
On SMS, short for Safety Measurement System, you can view safety fitness scores of motor carriers within 7 BASIC categories:
- Unsafe Driving
- Hours-of-Service (HOS) Compliance
- Driver Fitness
- Controlled Substance and Alcohol
- Vehicle Maintenance
- Hazardous Materials (HM) Compliance
- Crash Indicator
SMS provides much more specific information such as accident report data (e.g. date, location, road conditions), types of out-of-service inspections/violations (Driver and Vehicle), moving violations, Compliance Review violations and results, etc.
