Much like a “mission statement”, motor carriers should outline a brief and concise safety policy statement, which should include statements relating to the following principles and objectives:
- The safety of the public and employees is paramount.
- Safety must take precedence over expediency and/or short cuts.
- The company intends to comply with all Federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Every effort will be made to reduce the possibility of accidents.
This policy should be made known to all employees and drivers, and should be signed by the president of the company. It should also appear in company manuals relating to safety (e.g., policy and procedure manual, driver’s manual, etc.).
